The Basics of a Healthy Diabetes Diet!

]]>

In order for diabetics to free themselves of diabetes complications, they need to learn about diabetes diet recipes basics. Learning and practicing diabetes diet basics has been proven to control blood sugar levels and control body fat weight. And here is some very positive news: if you know how to improve your health, you can free yourself from many diabetes complications. While there are many ways this can be achieved, developing an insight into the diabetes diet basics will certainly go a long way.

Right from the start, it is important to point out that there is no simple dietary solution that can reverse diabetes. Looking for a ‘magic cure’ in the form of a particular diet simply is not the way to go. However, those that understand diabetes meal planning basics will discover remarkable improvements in their blood sugar levels and body fat weight.

Why is this so? It is because the proper type two diabetes diet can aid in reducing glucose levels in the blood. That alone will have significant impact on your overall health and wellness. This does raise the question as to what dietary choices are needed to achieve such a goal. The choices are not very complicated or at least not very complicated in terms of their general description.

Basically, you need to be aware of the amount of diabetes carbohydrates that you eat and drink. Carbohydrates are, sugars, soluble fiber, and insoluble fiber. And it becomes important that no diabetes diet contains excessive amounts of easy to digest carbohydrates. And, most assuredly, you would want to avoid those carbs that come from processed, refined sugars – aka white table sugar. Such sugar is the basic ingredient of junk food which is why it is certainly best avoided.

]]>

But, that does not mean your diabetes diet should be severely restricted in terms of carb intake. You do not want to venture into the realm of a “no carb” fad diet like Adkins Diet and the Zone Diet, where you are eating tons of fats and proteins. That may give you a slim physique (Bodybuilders love the low carb diet for just this reason) but it would also be an unbalanced diet that comes with hosts of other problems. If you have kidney disease, you should avoid a high protein diet – Check with your doctor and take low fat low carb recipes.

You will want your diabetic meal plans to be balanced, healthy, and maintain the right amount of calories to maintain a proper body weight. Now, some may be shaking their head at this notion. They may agree wholeheartedly that this is the right plan of action to take. Yet, they may not exactly know how to select and prepare their meals in such a way.

Here is some good news: you may not have to do so on your own. TypeFreeDiabetes.com offers diabetic meals delivered which can purchase as a gift for a diabetic or anyone who wants to eat healthy. Such delicious meals are perfectly designed by our chefs to ensure you are getting the right amount of carbs, fats, and proteins. And, of course, the calorie counts of the meals will not promote weight gain.

For those that may be struggling with crafting a diabetes diet plan, such delivered prepared meals may prove to be the best purchase they could make. Why make meal selections difficult for yourself when the meals are just waiting for you to pick out? This is the much easier plan.

Type 2 Diabetes Diet

]]>

A type two diabetic diet is all about controlling the number of calories people with diabetes eat. Because, unused calories become body fat. And, excess fat cells reduce insulin’s ability to remove sugar from the blood.

Maintaining a healthy diet is important for everyone, but it is especially important for people with diabetes. A type 2 diabetes diet and following the right diabetic diet meals can make all the difference to a person struggling to keep their blood sugar under control. But, what is the right meal plan? How much of which food group should you eat?

Controlling Diabetes with Diet

Your doctor has likely told you that you can control your Diabetes with diabetic diet menu. But what does “diet” really mean?

Taking on a new diet, or nutritional habit, means that you must learn about foods that are nutritious for your body and the portion sizes that are necessary for your blood sugar control.

You probably know that some foods raise blood sugar more than others. The foods that turn into sugar in your body are called carbohydrates. Carbohydrates include: starches (bread, cereal, rice, pasta, grains, crackers), fruits and fruit juice, milk and yogurt, starchy vegetables (corn, peas, beans, potatoes and sweet potatoes), sweets and sugar.

Diabetes carbohydrates

Dieting does not mean that you cannot eat the foods you like. Instead, you need to limit some foods and spread other foods out during the day (such as carbohydrate-rich foods), thereby, diabetes supplements, not eating large portions all at one time. Eating too many portions of carbohydrate-rich foods at one time will lead to high blood sugar levels.

]]>

For example: instead oGlycemic Index Graphf eating a plate of spaghetti with garlic bread, and a glass of milk (all carbohydrates); make ¼ of your plate spaghetti, add a salad with raw vegetables, a grilled chicken breast, and a glass of water with lemon.

Eating just a spaghetti meal with the bread and milk causes the blood sugar level to rise drastically after the meal. People with Diabetes cannot process all of the carbohydrates in order to bring the blood sugar down to a normal level. However, by choosing the second spaghetti meal, the blood sugar does not go up as high because there is are less carbohydrates to process and it is easier for the body to bring the blood sugar level back down.

Diabetes vitamins & Proteins

Meat, fish, chicken, eggs, cheese, cottage cheese, peanut butter and tofu are protein foods. Protein-rich foods do not immediately become sugar in our bloodstream after consumption. However, simply because these foods do not immediately turn to sugar doesn’t mean we can eat an unlimited amount of these foods; eating too much of any food will cause weight gain.

Think of food portions this way…Your 9 inch diet portion control plate should be ½ vegetables, ¼ lean meat or meat substitute, and ¼ Precise Portions Control FOCUS Dinnerware grains/starch. Add a small piece of fruit and 8 ounce glass of low-fat milk and you have a very nutritious, balanced meal that will help control your blood sugar.

This is the start of how you change the way you eat to include a more nutritious diet. For more nutritious eating ideas go to our recipes for diabetics. Remember to include diabetes exercises in your new way of life.

Diabetes Myths and Truths

Following are most common myths and misconceptions about diabetes, diet and related issues:

Myth: Diabetes is just a little sugar problem – it’s not that serious

Truth: Diabetes is a constitutional disease that affects the whole body. Constantly high blood sugar levels eventually lead to various health complications such as stroke, heart attack, kidney failure, amputation and blindness. So, its serious.

Myth: Genetics and eating sweets cause diabetes

Truth: Eating sweets does not cause diabetes. Eating sweets makes you fat which can lead to diabetes. Family traditions such as cooking and eating habits have a much significant impact on the development of diabetes than genetics. If you have genetic predisposition to diabetes, you can still live a healthy life if you make better decisions in terms of choice of food, exercise and lifestyle.

Myth: There is no cure for diabetes – once a diabetic, always a diabetic

Truth: Increasing medical evidence suggests that making changes to the diet to improve the nutrition, exercise and better emotional health can prevent and control type 2 diabetes. Once the disease is under control, further lifestyle changes can help improve conditions even more.

Myth: Diabetes is not serious if you are taking pills instead of insulin

Truth: Diabetes should be taken seriously regardless of the mode of treatment. Today, we live in a society in which taking pills is considered normal. This attitude reduces the severity of the disease in the minds of many people. As people get “comfortable” with their disease it continues to progress and creates other complications.

Myth: I don’t need to test blood glucose because I can feel it.

Truth: Nobody can consistently determine their blood glucose level accurately based on how they feel. Very high and very low blood sugar levels do produce certain symptoms that help in estimating their levels. However, most people feel just fine even if their blood glucose level is above 180. Unless you do regular testing, you have no way of knowing if you are in the danger zone. Corrective actions can be taken only when you know that you have consistently elevated blood sugar levels. But, don’t overdo it. Some people who have home blood glucose testing equipments, do too much testing. This can lead to stress and anxiety if their readings are consistently high.

Myth: Drugs work better than diet and lifestyle changes

Truth: Drugs work better in the short term. In the long term, diet and lifestyle changes can reverse diabetes, but not drugs. Most people like taking drugs instead of making changes to their lifestyle and diet. This is due to the intolerance of the society as a whole to pain and suffering. Also, most people believe that drugs “work” because they are advertised to do so. A diet of complex carbohydrates, protein and whole foods combined with lifestyle changes can help in blood sugar control and allow the body to restore insulin sensitivity.

What Is Gestational Diabetes?

Gestational Diabetes is a rare form of Diabetes that affects a small percentage of pregnant women. This can be a frightening experience for a mother-to-be when she first learns of her condition. The expectant mother’s level of physical awareness is already at its’ peak so when she later learns of her Gestational Diabetes condition, this make cause her significant anxiety.

How Is Gestational Diabetes Diagnosed?

Most OB/GYN doctors will require that the pregnant woman be tested for gestational diabetes at or around the 24th week of pregnancy. At this time there are a number of hormonal changes in the body which can bring about insulin resistance, especially the hormones that are produced by the placenta itself. At the same time, the fetus will have increased demands for insulin which brings up the total requirement to up to three times the normal quantity. If the insulin required is not available in the body or from external sources, the sugar remains in the blood. This is called as gestational diabetes.

Once gestational diabetes is diagnosed, the doctor will prescribe a strict regimen of general exercise and a moderated gestational diabetes diet plan which will help both the pregnant mother and the baby stay away from any dangers caused by the disease. When treated through moderation and close patient care, the pregnant mother and unborn child should not suffer ill effects.

The diet is one of the most important tools in fighting diabetes. It has been observed through a number of medical research studies that a well-designed and carefully prescribed gestational diabetes diet plan can be the key ingredient to successfully treating the disease. A mother-to-be will asked to pay strict attention to the type and quantity of carbohydrates she ingests. Along with general proteins, complex carbohydrates will be stressed over the simple type and foods lower on the glycemic index scale are considered the optimal choice for the gestational diabetes diet plan.

Besides following a balanced and carefully designed gestational diabetes diet plan the pregnant mother should try to break her daily food intake into more numerous smaller meals to give the pancreas sufficient time to break down the sugar in the blood before the next batch is sent. A pregnant woman will need a higher dose of glucose in the blood to nurture the growing baby and with moderated more frequent food ingestion, the pancreas is given sufficient time to break down the ingested sugar, calories, and fat.

Through continuous and simple blood sugar monitoring, regular exercise and a structured diet plan, an expectant mother should be able to lead a normal pregnancy. Paying particular attention to the foods she eats and keying on those that are low in the glycemic index will be the chief factors to success.

The Right Diet For The Diabetic

Diabetes is one of the main health problems not only in the country but also in the world. And it is not something that can be ignored both in financially and health wise. When left on its own, diabetes can spell a helluva of complications, from heart disease to liver problems.

It is perhaps the disease that causes the most number of complications in the body. Money wise, it is not cheap to have diabetes. In fact in studies conducted, 1/10 of the spendings of United States in Healthcare goes to Diabetes and its complications.
Because it is expensive and difficult to treat diabetes when it is already in its complications stage, patients are advised to nip the problem in the bud as soon as they can. If they can prevent diabetes from occurring with a few lifestyle changes especially in eating habits, all the better. This need for change spurned the creation of various kinds of diets that are designed to help diabetic patients and would be diabetics cope with the problem.

Although it was primarily conceptualized for people with heart problem, Atkins Diet is also being used as an alternative diet for people with diabetes. In fact, many diabetic patients have actually testified to its effectiveness. Atkins diet is primarily a low carbohydrate diet that aims to cut pounds by forbidding people under the program to eat carbohydrate-rich food.

These include rice, potatoes, bread and pasta. According to Dr. Robert Atkins, who created the diet for patients with heart problem in his clinic, the diet can also benefit diabetic patients because the decrease in caloric intake can reduce fats in the body; thereby reducing the risk for Type 2 diabetes.

The diet, however, is only effective with people who have a Type 2 diabetes or those whose diabetes is brought on by lifestyle of the person and his or her eating habits. It cannot do much for people who are already born with a problem in insulin secretion. These are the people with Type 1 diabetes. They depend solely on regular injections of insulin.

Still, there are critics that say that Atkins diet is not effective and in fact can lead to further complications. According to experts, the metabolism involved in the burning of fats instead of carbohydrates can cause problems and complications. Also, the intake of animal fat which diet does not restrict can increase cholesterol to dangerous levels; resulting in diabetes and even heart disease.
