A Struggle With Bipolar Disorder

Note: This is my view and my opinions regarding this chapter in my life. I miss my sister incredibly and would do anything to change how things are. She knows how much I love her.

To any family members who would like to complain about this video: because you would rather help aid the STIGMA attached to this disorder, please educate yourself for once or go back and bury your head in the sand. Your actions are reinforcing her SELF-STIGMA. Instead of thinking about YOUR EGO, start thinking about her LIFE!

Bipolar doesn’t just go away. It is treated and managed just like ANY OTHER ILLNESS like diabetes, etc. An accepting support network is a big key factor regarding anyone’s success with managing bipolar. People who would “like” to say they care should all be in the same boat. If all are floating around the boat and are not working together, we all drown. Meaning a “family” ends up being ripped apart because EGO’s are used instead of our HEARTS.

Think before you speak. Think before you act. Families should always pull together, not push each other away or make some members feel less loved or needed.

And we wonder why society is so messed up, it starts at HOME.

JamDaddyJoe, the reason we bipolars don’t use alternative treatments a lot of the time is simple: most of them don’t work. They don’t alleviate the symptoms of the disease as well as conventional drug therapies do.

Bipolar disorder can’t be treated with talk therapy alone– it is a medical condition that required medical treatment. In fact, lithium (the most widely used treatment) is a “naturally” occurring salt, and has been used since ancient times to stabilize moods.

    A very touching video..
I am unsure if she would appreciate it though…expressing feelings in person is so much more personal..
    Medication and therapy does help..
My twin and i (sister) were both diagnosed within the same year..
the difference between us was he character..
she denied the presence (and still does) of this mental illness.. she refused to take medication.. refused any help at all..
I did opposite…our lives are very different but we are very connected..

The Canadian mental health system failed me too. Rehab won’t take me because the doctors put me on benzos to begin with and if they detox me theres no doctors to take me except for a few days in a hospital lockdown.

my heart goes out to your sister. I hope she finds help

    or question …
or question anything a doctor says or does?). Unfortunate it ends up being the lawyers & insurance companies mostly & after the damage is done. This is & will all continue to change, hopefully. The system is still failing because the profession & govt. allows it to. Would have thought that de-institutionalization taught us all this years ago, much is still just under another face now. Can at least try alternatives before agreeing w/ all the nay sayers who have not…

& chemical imbalance treatment leads to near full to full remission in most cases. Why are they still treating solely with drugs and psychotherapy?, & putting down alternative treatments?) Anyways, check around for alternatives & read up on mental health from some different view points, sociology etc. A huge part of the problem is the illusions in the model as well as the expectations of roles as health care provider & patient (esp. roles of authority, like who are we or the patient to know …

    I think the saying …
I think the saying “if what you are trying is not working, try something else” applies. 19 yrs as a sociologist, much of that trying to appeal to the govt. & ‘mental health’ profession which both proliferate much of the ‘disorders’ they make a nice living from. First, do not believe everything the profession tells you, I walked away from the field because much is just one sided misconceptions, a pay check/living & poor care planning. (Eg. Research on schizophrenia has shown for yrs that diet …

Read Explaining colours to a blind man. Not only will it enlighten many as to what living with a mental illness is like, it also gives comfort to those sufferers who think there is no hope and that they are alone. It is very informative, sometimes shocking but also very funny in parts. All in all, a good read and highly recommended.

As a BP I understand what stigma feels like and so I don’t disclose I’m considered a highly functioning bipolar..I believe Wm Styron has been the only person who has ever described the feeling accurately: In depression faith in deliverance, in ultimate restoration, is absent. The pain is unrelenting, and what makes the condition intolerable is the foreknowledge that no remedy will come – not in a day, an hour, a month, or a minute. It is hopelessness even more than pain that crushes the soul
