What Cranial Nerve is affected when a person has diabetes and blood vessels in the retina are damaged.?

What nerve would be sending less sensory impulses?

The optic nerve.

The entire true answer goes deeper then that, as far as the actual cause, it stems from decreased circulation.

Babydoll – The 2nd cranial nerve is the optic nerve which carried vision from the retina (back wall) of the eye to the optic centers of the brain. In diabetes, small hemorrhages develop in the smallest arteries (arterioles) in the retina of the eye and destroy (or disconnect by hemorrhages) retina cells from the optic nerve causing loss of small amounts of vision. The "bleeds" need to be treated, often by a laser, as soon as possible, to prevent further damage.

cranial nerve ll – is the optic nerve
its not a nerve that has been effected

diabetes causes structural changes take place in the capillaries, thereby impeding the flow of nutrients to the retina. The lack of nutrients and oxygen to the tissue result in damage to the retina.

Diabetes can also alter the clear tissue covering the front of the eye. Decreased corneal sensation has been noted and swelling of the corneal tissue can reduce vision, sometimes dramatically in people with this disease.

To try to explain it in easier to understand terms…..
high blood sugar is like having really sweet sticky blood flowing through veins, arteries and capillaries. It sticks and blocks up the smaller areas and capillaries reducing oxygen and nutrition to certain areas such as eyes. Other problem areas for people with diabetes is kidneys. Kidney function can be reduced and even stop completely. Hands and feet can loose feeling and wounds in these areas may be hard to heal.

actually a particular nerve is not affected.diabetes is a disease of the vasculature. it affects the vasa vasorum(blood vessels that supply the nerves) and thus the nerves die without nutririon.
