Diabetes Type 2 : Myth about

Diabetes Type 2 : Myth about

There has been a lot of research done over recent years about the causes of type 2 diabetes. For example, doctors now realize more than ever before that type 2 diabetes is prevalent in the bloodline of families. It is very common for a person that has type 2 diabetes to find out that one or more of his relatives also had the disease. Therefore, type 2 diabetes has been labeled as an illness that is genetic.

Insulin Resistance The Major Factor In Type 2 Diabetes

While people with type 1 diabetes do not have enough insulin running through their bodies, those with type 2 diabetes actually have plenty of insulin. The problem is that they just do not respond to insulin in the normal ways a healthy person would. In other words, people with type 2 diabetes are what is called “insulin resistant”.

There are definitely signs of being insulin resistant before a person is actually diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. However, these signs are often ignored for years before the disease has set in. For example, a person can get a simple test that will show if the amount of insulin in their blood is higher than normal. Right now you can be a totally healthy person, eat right, exercise, and avoid drugs and alcohol, but you may have lower insulin resistance. By getting tested in knowing this information early, you can take steps to preventing type 2 diabetes.

Myths About Type 2 Diabetes

Do not get too paranoid after reading through the common signs and symptoms of type 2 diabetes. Although it is very important that you go see your doctor to get checked, it is also just as important to make sure that you are not the victim of false beliefs about type 2 diabetes. Below are some common falsehoods that people have about the causes of type 2 diabetes:

Stress is the cause of Type 2 diabetes : This is not true. While stress is a leading factor in many illnesses, high levels of stress have not been proven to cause diabetes. However, stress can definitely worsen the disease by triggering off other medical conditions.

Too much sugar is the cause of Type 2 diabetes? Eating high quantities of sugar does not necessarily cause diabetes. However, just like eating too much of anything, it will make you fat and lead to obesity – which is a leading cause of diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is gender specific. Diabetes is reported to strike men and women in equal proportions. Gender has no role when it comes to who gets stricken down with this disease.

Too many changes in your emotionsis the cause?. This is another falsehood that is mistakenly believed to be a cause of type 2 diabetes. There is no proof that changes in a person’s emotions plays a role in the development of this disease.

My boyfriend and his diabetes (type 1) + job… help! (i guess this is a health and relationship question)?

My boyfriend (Sam) is 22 and has had Type 1 Diabetes since he was 3. About 1 year into our relationship, he never really took care of his diabetes properly (i.e. no exercise, bad sleeping patterns, eating the wrong food). It look an 11 day stay in the hospital in December for him to realise what he was doing wrong. He had severe diabetic acidosis at the time (dangerous high blood sugar level) When he came out of hospital, he started taking his insulin properly (4 times a day as reccomended by his doctor) and eating and exercising.
Now there’s a problem. He’s going back to bad habits as currently he is jobless. He keeps saying he’s trying to find a job but it’s getting no where. Now he’s at home all the time, eating wrong and sleeping all day and not sleeping all night. And because he started eating alot out of boredom, he decided without consulting his doctor, to increase his insulin unit from 14 to 24.
Because of this, 2 nights ago he had a dangerous low sugar attack. He had an seizure and was being violent and I almost lost him that night. We had to call the paramedics and they said had I left it any longer or not been there, he would’ve for sure been dead. He doesn’t seem to understand how I feel about this. I’ve hardly slept since then because I’m scared it will happen again.
I don’t mean to be pushy with him, but he constantly talks about wanting a future with me, yet, how can that happen if he doesn’t start looking after himself. In 3 months (I am living with my parents) my parents will be retiring and leaving the country and I want to stay behind because of my job. Sam had plans that we would move in together and start a life together. But cause of his current situation, that’s not possible and now I have to share an apartment with another friend. I don’t know if he’s really trying to get himself together or not. I know we are in times of recession, but it doesn’t stop you from really trying to find a job. He’s been jobless 6 months now. At the same time, he doesn’t look after his health. Even with all this, he keeps talking about our future together (i.e. wedding, apartment.. )
What should I do? Do you think he is even responsible? I feel I can only help him to an extent without doing things for him as I have my own life to plan aswell. Am I being a bad girlfriend? Is it even wrong that I’m constantly worried about his health?? I just don’t want to wake up to find him dead. I’ve lost 2 nights of sleep.
Don’t get me wrong, Sam treats me like a princess. It’s just he’s so stubborn and won’t even have regular check ups for his diabetes and 6 months without a job is a long time.
What can I do??? I feel sooo lost….

How many people in your family have Diabetes? How late in life can you get type 1 Diabetes?

There is a lot of bad Diabetic history in my family. My grandpa has type 2 Diabetes, but I’m not overly concerned with type 2, because I exercise regularly and aside from family history, I don’t really have any of the “at risk” signs. I’m mainly concerned with type 1. My uncle has it, and my brother was diagnosed with it when he was about a year old. A couple of years later, my sister was diagnosed when she was about 12.

I’m the only “kid” in the family without type 1. Some people say since they have it, I’m bound to get it some day. Other people say that 2/3 children with diabetes is already rare, so 3/3 is almost guaranteed not to happen. How should I look at this?

I know most people with type 1 get it when they are younger (hence the name juvenile Diabetes), but I’m sure older people can get it too. How old was the oldest person you know at the time they were diagnosed?
Thanks! I do test my blood once in a while to make sure it’s normal and every couple of years or so I do an official blood test at the doctor’s just to make sure too… :(

What other meds can I take for diabetes type 2 besides going on insulin?

I have tried Actos & Avandia in the past (retained water like crazy). I have also tried Metformin (my stomach cannot handle even 500mg). I have been taking only Januvia for a month, but it is not helping to control it enough. I eat a fairly good diabetic diet and walk every day. Should I get stricter still with my diet & exercise even more?
