i don’t know if a 12 year old needs a plan, really. just feed him well and limit fried food/fast food. and watch out how much time is spent sitting in front of the tv/ computer.

enroll him in a sport that interests him or get him a bike or skateboard. make a family commitment to be active together.

Have fun with your son, go swimming or camping with him. If the whole family doesn’t do it, how can he model good behavior? You can shove him in an exercise camp now, but when he’s an adult he might as well have a sedentary lifestyle if that is all he was raised in. There are community run programs and teams that aren’t hardcore as camps and they’re way cheaper.

I hate to break it to you but if your family are prone to getting Type 2 Diabetes, then unfortunately it could be in the genes. Of course staying fit and healthy is the best advice, but if its in the genes, even if he is fit and healthy, he could still get diabetes.

Your son is only 12yrs old. He should be out having fun with his friends, playing games that involve running with his friends, cycling, basketball – or whatever else he ENJOYS doing (which should keep him fit anyway). See link.

Don’t push him to go to the gym or do weights because if anything, that will probably put him off exercise – “boring”, “routine”, are a couple of words that may come to a 12yr old’s mind!

I would also recommend the Nintendo Wii which is great fun, and this new game which is coming out soon called Junior Fitness Trainer. See link…

Or even the well known ‘Wii Fit’.

well.. if he likes to be active.. physically.. u can run or walk 40 minutes a day. if he is not the usual “active” i would recommend this: drink a glass of water before every meal prior to eating. check his portion size: 3 ounces of fish, chicken, etc. is about the size of a women’s palm, or a deck of card. make sure he does something in the house: doing the chores, going up and down the stairs, or washing the window for 30 mintues or so. make sure u also run 30 mintues at night too.. and i would recommend eating only fruits and vegies for dinner. and corns. or dairy.
